I may be the only one who ever reads this but it is a way of documenting what is going on in our lives. We are way behind on posting pictures but I have decided not to try and catch up--because that makes this task all to overwhelming--but just to start from here. The most exciting thing that happened this week was that Portland/Vancouver got some rain that turned to snow and then back to rain again. I serve in the Portland Temple every Wednesday during the early shift and that was the day that the weatherman was predicting that we could get some snow. I was stressing about it a little because our car pool leaves Vancouver at 5:00 AM and we were hoping not to have slick roads. The weather man said that the snow would probably turn to rain about 7:00 AM because of a warm front that was coming from the south but I wanted it to turn to rain earlier than that. I carpool to the temple with Sister Stinchfield from the Salmon Creek Ward and she is the shift coordinator and I am one of her assistants so we felt extra pressure to be able to get there. When I went to be Tuesday night I felt pretty calm about the whole thing--because we all know that we have dealt with many snowy days and icy roads while living in Utah and Idaho. I woke up about 2 in the morning and looked out the window saw a scene right out of a postcard with a couple of inches of white snow covering the yards and the street illuminated by all the streetlights. It looked very pretty and peaceful--and even then I didn't feel worried. By the time I pulled out of the garage at 5:00 AM I could tell that the snow had already turned to rain and we were just going to have to deal with wet slushy roads just like what we would face with an end of winter snow in the spring in Rexburg. "Piece of cake" I put the Trailblazer in 4 wheel drive and headed to the Park n Ride but Sister Stinchfield was alreading waiting for me there and volunteered to drive her Suburban. We got down to the temple without any trouble. The roads on the freeway were just wet and we had more snow in Vancouver and didn't even see snow again on the side of the road until we got to Lake Oswego. We had a really quiet day in the temple because everyone else must have been afraid to come out on the roads. The only patrons that came in all morning were 4 different groups of Elders from the Portland mission. It was still the best place in the whole world to be that day and I feel very blessed that we weren't in any danger on the roads. Now--for those living north of us and in Seattle--it was a different story. The temperatures were much colder up north and they got more snow and their rain became freezing rain and their roads were a mess. It is still raining most of each day and for a day or two this week places south of Portland have had some problems with flooding. Rain is still in the forecast but for now I feel so thankful that we are safe, comfortable and warm in our little home.<br />I am heading out for more adventures this week. I leave on Wednesday to fly to Omaha to see Kris, Cami, Jordan, and Joseph. I get to be there for Joseph's 3rd birthday. Then on January 31st I will fly to Phoenix to visit with Mom for a couple of weeks. I am going now because I in on some good flight prices and I also have some time off from my duties at the temple.<br />I am also having a little bit of a health issue. I have had numbness and tingling in my fingers and toes since the beginning of December and after several trips to different doctors and physical therapists blood tests have shown that I am low on Vitamin B12 so I have been getting a shot every day. I have noticed that my energy level is up but the numbness is still there. When I get back from this trip I will probably have to have more shots. <br />This morning in Relief Society our lesson was on President Monson's talk given in Conference last October about 'standing in Holy Places'. While re-reading his talk I noticed this quote, <br /><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"><blockquote> ". . . that there is <strong><em>nothing</em></strong> which can bring more joy into our lives or more peace to our souls than the Spirit which can come to us as we follow the Savior and keep the commandments." </blockquote><blockquote></blockquote></span><br /><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0);"> <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">T</span></span><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">hat is my thought for the week. Like Cameron said in the previous blog--I started in Omaha, Nebraska and within a few days Cameron and I took the scenic route to Ft. Madison, Iowa, across the river to Nauvoo, Illinois, then to Carthage, Illinois; Hannibal, Missouri; Adam-on-Di-Aman; Independence, Missouri; Liberty, Missouri; and then back to Omaha to spend time with Kris, Cami, Jordan, and Jo-Jo. I got to go to walking club twice and lunch once at Jordan's school. After flying back to SLC it was on to Women's Conference in Provo with Ashley and Rita and our friend from college, Nancy Stewart. We had a lot of fun complaining about our tiny little old dorm rooms and somewhat less than attractive bathroom but by the time we went to all the classes and walked all over campus the beds felt pretty good. We ate mint brownies and chocolate covered cinnamon bears and even got to see Rebecca and Baby Jack and he really is as cute as he looks in pictures. The conference was over before we knew it and I went back to South Jordan with Ashley and we spent the weekend checking out the new Deseret Book flagship store next to Temple Square and painting a wooden craft together and working on the handouts for the lesson she taught in Young Womens on Sunday on Temple Marriage. She did great!! On Tuesday, Ashley and I flew to Phoenix to spend a week with Grandma Mom so she wouldn't be alone on Mothers' Day. We had a good time just relaxing in the sun and around the pool. OK--we did a little shopping --and some eating--and some working out--but mostly just enjoying the warm temperatures and swimming. It was all good.</span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;">It is good to be back home again with Cary and Baxter--but it does make me wish that we all lived closer together so that it wouldn't be such an expense to get all together. I am now getting back into the thick of things like serving at the temple on Wednesday mornings, Girls' Camp and the Regional Dance Festival coming up in about a month here in Vancouver.</span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;">I was reading an old Ensign today after Church and I found this quote from President Hinkley: "<span style="color:#cc0000;">I hope that everyone gets to the temple on a regular basis. . . . . I know your lives are busy. I know that you have much to do. But I make you a promise that if you will go to the house of the Lord, you will be blessed, life will be better for you."</span></span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;color:#000000;">What a great blessing and promise made by a prophet of the Lord. I know that going to the temple on a weekly basis has been a real blessing in my life and has made me wish that we had gone more often when our family was young because as I reflect back on those busy days I realize that very often we spent a lot of time on things that don't really matter. Attending the temple teaches us why we are really here on this earth and why we wanted to come and life really is better when we put spiritual things before wordly wants and desires. Those things will all fall into place if we focus on Heavenly Fathers plan and let Him guide us. I challenge us all to not get caught up in the "thick of thin things" and make time for attending the Temple on a regular basis. Have a great week. Working in West Yellowstone has its perks, but one of the disadvantages is that you don't ever get to take summer vacations. In fact, you don't hardly leave West Yellowstone for four months. I love it, but I miss out on a lot.</div><div></div><br /><div>I've never been to Nauvoo. When my family went a few years ago, I was working in West Yellowstone (see?). With Kris living in Omaha, I decided that was the best place for a quick trip. I wanted to see what everyone was talking about. Mom caught wind of the plans and decided to join. </div><div></div><br /><div>So the two of us spent a couple days in Omaha with Kris and his family where I went to Winter Quarters and Kanesville Tabernacle (Council Bluffs). </div><div></div><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465209365868351618" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG3jO0MynQ5R7kBq3CTh2jE6-xTus8nabAbvEUfg0PzcwMR2etm9WRK3xq6f-KcOfELg7NiMNFi05dCouxw2LZgfnaS7y9ueqy-kwJl9tTjHhlepkyP0IYu7BeW9ErxYPX_kG_FEJnvRo/s320/Mormon+Trail+Center+at+Winter+Quarters2+copy.jpg" border="0" /></div><div align="center">On Saturday we drove to Illinois and spent just over 24 hours in Nauvoo... </div><div></div><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465209347340312498" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoyvO1VGK_lXGqRNQRYQwOg5txDxdwBLKAwOuc3BvoFMolEq-JQvEx7Ar_kIH7MUOKHOaiWt5wSkb9hMzareR8cadAeM4fTRX9DstU2siVXDhhTqwDO9FWXiAo-Njyq-CwnjWQeTTkA7k/s320/Nauvoo+Water+Tower+with+Mom.jpg" border="0" /></div><br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465209326478718786" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzU1R8Cm0D4BhO65AwDE9gAg38NAcb4wtxFBPvtQwpMLh9dRc6XwGfJrRuSBSxYzn5HftyjrnZWQAPZNzjkmEFNy18Dn0W7hVYfJ4aMq42N57aqW1BHWPVH1yv33tpB8amwat3ciPvsgQ/s320/In+Front+of+Nauvoo+Temple.jpg" border="0" /></div><div align="center">...and made a quick stop at Carthage. </div><div align="center"></div><br /><div align="center"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465209356859714930" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPaVat9IFvb_9wBSrnRoaonI-jTl01NZBQihi3rKUi0bn3hSH7EDrFZkSGYBamvKLTR3hTHvWW4beSuxk699clE1YEm3VwUMbelWTHr8t_SvroN383-VS5KbP247P67arO_lDTiVseHxs/s320/Carthage+Harvey1.jpg" border="0" /></div><div></div><div align="center">We then drove through Quincy and stayed the night in Hannibal, MO. We are hearing a lot about the Winter Olympics that are going to start this week in that other Vancouver--and we wish we could go--but it is not going to happen. We will watch it on TV--but it brings to memory the time we went to the Winter Olympics in SLC eight years ago. Cameron was just leaving the MTC for Hong Kong and we just found out that our good friend, Becky had cancer. Thankfully she survived treatment and is still with us and Cameron served an awesome mission.<br />We just got some good news a few minutes ago. Chase just found out that he has been accepted to BYU-Idaho and he and Shyla will be moving to Rexburg next summer to start school there in the fall. CONGRATULATIONS to them. <br />Like I said --not much going on with us this week. I made several trips to the Dr. for various reasons and everything is pretty much up to par for me. My liver is still huge with 10-12 cm cysts and a CT scan just showed that there may be a cyst on one of my kidneys. The dr. doesn't seem to be too concerned and I will get re-checked in 6 months. We went to see Avatar on Saturday and that was pretty awesome. We didn't see it in 3-D because the theater we went to didn't show it in 3-D--but it was still awesome. I was more impressed with the scenery and the technology of the Avatar's than the story-line--but the whole thing was still pretty fun to watch. I would recommend it.<br />The super bowl was yesterday--but really--who cares. It doesn't really matter much in the whole eternal scheme of things. While studying in Alma this week for my Institute class I came upon a thought about faith from President Joseph Feilding Smith. "If we want to have a living, abiding faith, we must be active in the performance of every duty as members of this Church". Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin taught, "Faith exists when absolute confidence in that which we cannot see combines with action that is in absolute conformity to the will of our Heavenly Father. Without all three--first, absolute confidence, second, action; and third, absolute conformity--without these three, all we have is a counterfeit, a weak and watered-down faith". I am trying to do better about understanding what my Heavenly Father wants me to do with the time that I have left on this earth. I know that in order for my faith to be strenthened, I must do all I can to obey the commandments and serve in my callings. My hope for my family is that we can all try each day to gain a stronger faith in the things that really matter. On Sunday after attending church to hear Josh give his homecoming mission talk, we headed south to Edmonds to catch the Ferry across the sound to Kingston on the Olympic Penninsula. We could have done a lot more --we would have liked to have continued down the coast but we were running out of time so after leaving Forks we headed back home. Hopefully soon we can go back. I hope everyone who reads this blog will have a good week and your prayers will all be answered in the way that you want them to be. This morning in Sacrament Meeting the talks were centered on President Monson's talk about "Have you done any good in the world today". I decided to challenge myself to consciously try to do one nice thing for someone each day and record it in my journal. Saturday we had a Stake Relief Society Conference and it was dedicated to providing service in our community. After gathering together and hearing some remarks from our Stake President, we were given the choice of 20 different places we could go in the community to provide service. They included singing in nursing homes, preparing meals in homeless shelters, cleaning and painting, etc. Most of my friends had just about decided that they weren't going to go--but I called a couple of them and we went anyway. We ended up going to the Vancouver Genealogical Society--that I didn't even know existed--and cutting vital information(births, deaths, marriages, etc.) out of the local paper so they can be copied and put on file for anyone who wants that kind of information for their genealogical research. We only stayed for a couple of hours but it was fun and good memories were made that we would have missed if we had all stayed home. The lady at the center was just thrilled that we would come to help her. Like my Grandma Hanks used to say--if you skip a meeting or fireside you might miss something that Heavenly Father wants you to know. I know this is true. Have a good week. He jumped into my lap and tried to get up on top of the ironing board.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I have decided to try and be a little more active with this blogging thing and use it to keep everyone updated on what is going on around here. I used to try and send a family e-mail around every week but kind of got out of the habit so I want to use the family blog to try and keep in touch with everyone. I may even try to figure out how to post some pictures. I would rather do it on the blog rather than facebook because facebook is so "out there" for everyone to see and the blog is a little more personal. Anyway--here we go. This past week has been a week of making chili sauce, rain, bottling green beans from the garden, more chili sauce, monthly book club luncheon, sun, walks with Baxter, Enrichment night, service in the temple, making salsa, Mutual, more sun, more tomatoes made into Salsa, MRI on Dad's knee, Institute class, skinning more tomatoes for bottled tomatoes, Dad drinking yucky stuff the day before his colonoscopy, the colonscopy, stopping at Joe's Farm for onions, peppers, and garlic to make more Salsa, a long nap after being under anesthesia for a colonoscopy and for being the wife of the one who had the colonoscopy, a campout at Camp Currie with Young Women, more walks with Baxter, rain that shortens the campout, more Salsa, a disappointing BYU game, cleaning the church, and preparing a lesson on overcoming temptation for Young Women. Whew!! Tomorrow we are going to start all over--except that this week I get to fly to Chicago to see Jonny, Ashley and Cubby and then to Nauvoo--one of my favorite places in the whole world, and then to Omaha to see Kris, Cami, Jordan, and Joseph, and then to Salt Lake to listen to the prophet speak. Woo! Hoo! (and see Nick and Cam)</div><div align="left"><span style="color:#cc0000;">This is is my thought for the week: It is part of the dedicatory prayer given by President Monson for the Oquirrh Mountain Temple: "In a time of departure from safe moorings, may youth of the noble birthright carry on in the traditions of their Parents and grandparents. They are subjected to the sophistries of Satan. Help them stand firm for truth. Open wide to their view the gates of learning or understanding, of service in Thy kingdom. <strong>Bless them with a lengthened view of their eternal possibilities." </strong></span>To my children, who are all youth of the noble birthright, let us never forget the sacrifices of those who pulled their handcarts through the snow and left their homes and sacrificed many physical possessions to make a better life for us all because of their testimonies of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May we all have a lengthened view of our eternal possibilities and look for the personal revelation that is promised us. You all have a patriarchal blessing with blessings and promises. Claim the blessings that have been promised you through your worthiness. I love you all. Mom</div><div align="left"><br /><br />Ok--I tried my best. I couldn't get the pictures to go where I wanted them so I obviously need some more help. I will keep trying. In all aspects of life, we naturally gravitate towards anything that makes us feel safe. In this piece, I wanted to convey a sense of complete peace and calm like only the Savior can provide. It's a security that allows us to rest assured, without fear or worry, when we put ourselves trustingly in His arms. Little children have that inherent kind of trust in their parents, so it's fitting that the man and girl who modeled for "Security" are actually father and daughter. They generated the exact feel I was looking for. </p><p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4j_pNTWXSUZy0YTTPOVdo_ajAUzl82K_7cx5yhGLm9S8sftqv4lE86Ij7krPyBVU269IOpOSzL2X3mhz7FbNbHSgytYoIkvdFzJs9aRDbHMcS06tNWMoFTsJw2QiRRk5FEfQmAC9m6_dL/s1600-h/my_child.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287830574139860018" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 312px; height: 400px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4j_pNTWXSUZy0YTTPOVdo_ajAUzl82K_7cx5yhGLm9S8sftqv4lE86Ij7krPyBVU269IOpOSzL2X3mhz7FbNbHSgytYoIkvdFzJs9aRDbHMcS06tNWMoFTsJw2QiRRk5FEfQmAC9m6_dL/s400/my_child.jpg" border="0" /></a> "My Child"<br />This piece conveys an intimate, up-close-and-personal feeling of the Savior's love. Notice how all the lines draw your attention and point towards Jesus' face in the center. I chose the name "My Child" because the only thing that could compare (even remotely) to Christ's compassion for us is the love of a parent for his/her child. This image is also intended to put things in perspective. Above all, we are God's children first. He allows us the privelege of experiencing parenthood for ourselves and we are entrusted to be the mothers and fathers of His.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEillkwJWMpOGbe9lds8G3mwqunK23CqsF9LXND134nKQDDM5VOqcTELgfVE-PaavEFl_AjOTn02vxkrSrYvJFJ1OrxTUrdvy-G74PBIPH1BJINvdvcY-v6ZZR2ALFmzCAcsPebQFOdyNcmB/s1600-h/innocence.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287830570424952146" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 312px; height: 400px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEillkwJWMpOGbe9lds8G3mwqunK23CqsF9LXND134nKQDDM5VOqcTELgfVE-PaavEFl_AjOTn02vxkrSrYvJFJ1OrxTUrdvy-G74PBIPH1BJINvdvcY-v6ZZR2ALFmzCAcsPebQFOdyNcmB/s400/innocence.jpg" border="0" /></a> "Innocence"</p><div align="center"><div align="center">The Savior tells us we need to become as little children to inherit the kingdom of God. I've often wondered what it is about little children Jesus loves most, and I think its their innocence. They are clean slates, seeing the world and others through untarnished eyes. Their hearts are pure, without the baggage of cynicism and self-doubt. In this piece, I've tried to imagine how a child would act upon meeting the Master for the first time. Without reservation or inhibition, I think he would simply want to play with Him. He would be at complete ease, allowing his pure little heart to soak in the love and laughter of His pure, infinite heart. I have to admit that we were starting to get a little tired of slippery, slushy roads and, voila, they are all gone--just one week later. Now we are having a regular Northwest Winter--grey skies and lots of rain.</div>The Boyleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04611278702009291153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5870345207640896779.post-6017372924296116922008-12-20T15:40:00.000-08:002008-12-20T15:59:45.802-08:00The Tree Wisemans<div><div><div align="center">We went yesterday to cut down the Christmas tree.
